To obtain an aqueous emulsion polymer exhibiting proper and improved performance characteristic and high disperse stability as a sizing agent and having low foaming tendency.
This polymer is obtained by initiating addition polymerization of at least one kind of monomer by free-radical reaction in the presence of a mixture of (A) a degraded starch with (B) at least one kind of polymer emulsion selected from a group comprising (i) sulfo-containing maleic anhydride copolymers and/or terpolymers, (ii) sulfo-containing oligourethanes having branched molecular structure and (iii) a mixture thereof and preferably a water- soluble oxidation-reduction system. A method for producing the emulsion polymer preferably comprises polymerizing a monomer until the conversion ratio reaches 95% and completing the polymerization in the presence of an organic peroxide exhibiting low solubility in water.
