To provide an in-plane switching type liquid crystal display device having high transmittance and excellent viewing angle characteristics.
The in-plane switching type liquid crystal display element includes a liquid crystal drive side substrate having a linear electrode formed in a bend shape, a counter substrate opposing to the liquid crystal drive side substrate, and a liquid crystal layer which is formed between the liquid crystal drive side substrate and the counter substrate and comprises a nematic liquid crystal composition containing a chiral compound; and the display element employs a multi-domain driving system by use of the shape of the linear electrode. Each pixel includes a first region where liquid crystal molecules rotate in a first direction when an electric field is applied, and a second region where the liquid crystal molecules rotate in a second direction different from the first direction, separated by the bend portion of the linear electrode. The area of the first region is larger than the area of the second region.
