PURPOSE: To improve efficiency for index preparation by automating the preparation of an index with the processing of any specified flow chart.
CONSTITUTION: A device 100 is composed of a data processor 1, operation input means 2 connected to the data processor 1, display means 3, data input/ output means 4 and printing means 5 or the like. In this case, the preparation of the index is automated by executing the flow chart composed of a typesetting simulation means, printing position data preparing means, data retrieving means, page discriminating means and index preparing means. Namely, text data are retrieved, records consisting of the text data are retrieved, which page of text data prints data for index as a retrieving object is discriminated based on these retrieved records and the printing position data of prepared records, and the index showing the relation between the data for index and the printing page of text is prepared based on this printing page discriminated result.
