PURPOSE: To index a waistband into belt loop attaching positions by detecting the seam of the waistband, obtaining the reference point of a position to sew a belt loop and stopping the movement of the waistband at the time of advancing to a succeeding belt loop attaching position.
CONSTITUTION: In this method of indexing the waistband W of trousers T moved in a longitudinal direction through a sewing station 12 into the belt loop attaching positions in the sewing station 12 of a sewing machine 10, the end part of the waistband W which is a part to position a waist band loop end part is arranged at the sewing station 12 of the sewing machine 10 first and the first belt loop L is sewn. Then, the waistband W is moved in the longitudinal direction through the sewing station 12, the presence of the seam of the waistband W is detected, the reference point correlated to the attaching position of the belt loop L is obtained and the movement of the waistband W is stopped as the attaching position of the belt loop L is successively moved.
