PURPOSE: To obtain an instrument for measuring cross-sectional wear of rails having at least one of such functions that the instrument is hardly affected by disturbance light, the calculating time of the instrument is short, and the instrument can discriminate the kind of rails.
CONSTITUTION: A processing section 4 is provided with frame memories (FMs) 7 and 10, single-chip microcomputer 11 which controls each device and calculates the abrasion value of each device, switch (SW) 5 which switches picture data storing addresses, A/D and D/A converters 6 and 8 connected to the output side of the FM 7, and a binarization circuit 9 which is a means for taking differences. The microcomputer 11 has the functions of a means which expresses the data to be used as reference values of rail shapes and data outputted from a CCD camera in a thin line, means which finds the deviation between the reference data and data expressed in the thin line, means which processes pictures in a window, means which discriminates the kind of rails, and means which finds a reference point.
