PURPOSE: To provide a recording carrier which is provided with an encoding device and a decoding device and which is optimum for a recording/reproducing system by recording the address of a recording carrier and synchronous information in a form that a prescribed parameter satisfies a specified condition.
CONSTITUTION: The recording carrier can record information in the form of a code word and it is divided into previously recorded information areas 9. The information areas are separated by the address and synchronous areas, which record the address and synchronous information in the form of a group of code words. The respective code words have time lengths equal to Sτ0 and they are constituted of M-pieces of auxiliary groups Gm (m=1-M and i=1-I) provided with one signal position tmi positioned at equal time intervals τ. Then, k-pieces of positions tmi are set to be signal positions where signal values which can be discriminated from the signal values of the non-occupation signal positions tmi of the auxiliary group Gm occupy and it is assumed to be 1≤k≤I. The initial position tmi of Gm is assumed to be 0≤m≤τ and it is positioned from the head of the code word with the different time intervals m. The conditions of M≤2 and m+(I-1)τ≤Sτ0 are given. The case of M=2, I=S=2, K=1, τ=τ0, 2=-1+1/2τ is excepted.
