To display a character in a visually satisfactory condition by writing a display pattern while shifting it in the up and down directions and in the left and right directions or in oblique directions by the amount of not less than one dot on a memory and finally writing a character in a first position where the character is not shifted while changing dot information to enable an edge forming in real time.
A character font is transferred from a host computer to be written into a RAM 2. A coordinate on which a character is made to be displayed at the outset becomes the address of a VRAM 3. The whole of a character is shifted from the coordinate in the right direction by the amount equivalent to one dot to be written in the RAM 3 with an edge forming color. Next, the character is shifted in the reverse direction to be written in the VRAM 3 by being overlapped. Moreover, the character is shifted in the up and down directions by respectively one dot to be overwritten. Finally, the character is returned to an original position to be written with a character color. After the processing of display characters equivalent to one screen is completed, a dot matrix-composite signal processing is performed by a DENC 4 and this signal is converted into an analog signal by a DAC 5 to be displayed on a CRT 6.
