PURPOSE: To effectively utilize the transmission band of a transmission line and to compress information matched with the transmission band by discriminating the transmittable band of the transmission line and providing the compressed or non-compressed information matched with the band.

CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a band detection part 9a for detecting the band transmittable by the transmission line, encoders 71, 72...7m for compressing the information to be provided at different compressibilities and a connection part 4a for selecting the information providable within the range of the transmittable band detected in the band detection part 9a from the information compressed in the encoders 71, 71...7m or the non-compressed information. Then, a control part 5 is supplied with signals sent out by users I...X and instructs reproduction to a reproduction part storing a program specified by the user so as to compress or non-compress and provide the program specifies by the user as specified. When the user specifies the compressibility, the encoder for performing compression at the compressibility is selected and the reproduction part to which the reproduction is instructed or a connection device is connected to the connection part 4a in one-to-one correspondence.
