The article monitoring system comprises an IC tag stuck to an article, a portable terminal having a function for reading out the IC tag and a server apparatus for communicating with the portable terminal, and a control part of the IC tag generates purchase completion information indicating that the article has been formally purchased and transmits the information to the portable terminal. When a connection request is outputted from the portable terminal, the server apparatus determines that the article has been formally purchased on the basis of the purchase completion information received from the portable terminal and controls communication to connect the portable terminal.
