To keep high-grade recording at all times irrespective of kinds of recording sheets and recording modes and prevent picture quality from deteriorating due to offset printing by controlling an air-blowing direction to be changed over to a direction in which a recording head is cooled and to a direction in which a medium to be recorded advances.
An air-blowing fan control unit 17 change over the direction of an air-blowing fan 19 and controls the same to be operated on the basis of identification signals, each being sent from a kind-of-recording sheet idendifying means 14 and from a recording mode identifying means 15. In the case where a recording sheet P is identified as the kind which requires no particular time to absorb and dry ink on the basis of the identification signal from the kind-of-recording sheet identifying means 14, or in the case where a designated mode is identified as an ordinary recording mode on the basis of the identification signal sent from the recording mode identifying means 15, the air-blowing fan control unit 17 directs the blowing direction of the air- blowing fan 19 toward a recording head 1, and, at each time when the recording head 1 is led toward the air-blowing fan 19, the recording head 1 is cooled by the operation of the air-blowing fan 19.
