An operation part 11 of a character input device 1 is provided with a first input line L1 with an input area to which a "line" of characters are specified disposed thereon, a second input line L2 with an input area to which a "stage" of characters are specified disposed thereon; and a third input line L3 with an input area to which numeric characters are specified disposed thereon, the lines being formed by means of touch pads. The operation part 11 is provided with a button B1 changing an input mode, a button B2 transforming input characters into Kanji characters and a button B3 canceling the input characters, the buttons being formed by means of the touch pads. A user, for example, hold the input device 1 at a left hand, performs press operations of the buttons B1-B3 with fingers of the left hand and performs touch operations and slide operations of each input line L1-L3 with fingers of the right hand, so that the user inputs the characters, etc. with such a feeling of playing the guitar.
