To reduce fuel consumption quantity in a low rotation speed part load region by using an impulse valve without providing a special means such as a one valve deactivation mechanism.
In an engine showing supercharging effect by increasing flow speed of intake air by opening and closing an intake port 16 by the impulse valve 32 in a low rotation speed heavy load region, open and close timing of the impulse valve 32 is retarded more than open and close timing in the low rotation speed heavy load region to reduce pumping loss accompanying open and close of the impulse valve 32 when fuel consumption quantity is reduced in the low rotation speed part load region by operating the impulse valve 32 for increasing flow speed of intake air and increasing combustion stability. Hence a fuel consumption quantity reduction effect is effectively shown by improvement of combustion stability accompanying increase of flow speed of intake air while limiting pumping loss to the minimum, and fuel consumption quantity is reduced without providing the special means such as the one valve deactivation mechanism to generate swirl in intake air.
