Title:
INTERFERENCE TYPE OPTICAL SWITCH
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3555842
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the optical switch which can be operated over a wide wavelength range by making the Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer type switches of respective stages mutually different in optimum operation wavelength in a range wherein a desirable quenching ratio is obtained.
SOLUTION: A 2-input, 2-output optical switch comprises two Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer circuits 21 and 22 and a crossing waveguide 15. An optical path length difference determined by signal light wavelength is made slightly different between the Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer circuit 21 of the 1st stage and the Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer circuit 22. In concrete, the desirable quenching ratio is set to 50 dB and the optical operation wavelength is shifted by 100. Namely, the respective stages are made slightly different in the optical path length difference between ON and OFF states, i.e., the optimum operation wavelength and put in partial charge of wavelength areas for quenching. Consequently, the quenching wavelength area can be expanded to put to practical use a optical switch which can operates over a wide wavelength range.
