To provide an intermediate transfer type thermal transfer printer capable of surely detecting a malfunction of a film conveyance system.
This intermediate transfer type thermal transfer printer 1 is equipped with a photosensor 55 for detecting a mark on a film F. The printer 1 prints a first mark M1 on the film F, conveys the film F until the photosensor 55 detects the mark M1, and then prints a second mark M2 thereon. After the mark M1 is moved to the upstream side of the photosensor 55, a platen roller 20 is rotated to convey the film F by outputting a pulse signal to a pulse motor 50. The number of pulses of the pulse signal outputted to the pulse motor 50 from the time when the photosensor 55 detects the mark M1 until it detects the mark M2, is counted. When the number of pulses is out of a predetermined range, it is judged that a malfunction occurs in the conveyance of the film F.
