PURPOSE: To make lean-burn in a large air-fuel ratio possible by generating a stronger tumble flow in a combustion chamber to carry out stratification in the combustion chamber more completely.
CONSTITUTION: The present stratified charge combustion internal combustion engine has in a combustion chamber 30 an intake air port 46 and a fuel supply means to genetate a stratified tumble flow in which the fuel concentrations are different form each other. An ignition means is arranged in the combustion chamber 30 so as to ignite the fuel rich tumble. Since a top surface of a piston 26 has an inclined surface to promote the stratified tumble flow, the tumble flow is strenghtened, and stratification in the combustion chamber 30 is carried out more completely, and lean-burn is a larger air-suel ratio becomes possible.
