To provide a safe and nontoxic antimicrobial agent having durability for a long period of time and developing minimum generation of resistant or multiply resistant microbes.
The ionene polymer having antimicrobial activity is a cationic polymer in which a substantial proportion of the atoms providing the positive charge are quaternized nitrogen atoms located in the main polymeric chain or backbone of the polymer rather than in pendant groups. The method includes the ionene polymer-containing antimicrobial composition and administration of a therapeutically effective amount of the antimicrobial composition to a mammal for treating persistent microbial infection. Also the method includes the ionene polymer-containing antimicrobial composition and a process for bringing a susceptible surface into contact with the composition to prevent, inhibit or exclude growth, dissemination and/or accumulation of microorganisms on the susceptible surface (including, but not limited to, the spasticity of biofilms on the susceptible surface).
