PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity isobutylene by bringing isobutylene containing butene-1 into contact with a catalyst containing a metal of the group VIII in the presence of H2 containing CO to isomerize butene-1 to butene-2 and removing the produced butene-2 by distillation.
CONSTITUTION: 1mol isobutylene feed material containing 0.2-2.0wt.% butene-1 is brought into contact with a catalyst containing a metal of the group VIII in the presence of 0.002-0.008 H2 containing 200-20000mol ppm CO at 30-70°C to isomerize butene-1 to butene-2 and the produced butene-2 is removed by distillation to provide the high-purity isobutylene for butyl rubber production reduced in butene-1 content. Pd is preferably used as the metal of the group VIII and preferably added to a support such as alumina at an amount of 0.01-10.0wt.% (preferably 0.01-1.0wt.%).
