To provide a joining method of different metals by which different metallic materials can be joined to each other by heating from the outside of a vehicle body without impairing appearance or latitude of design, and also the infiltration of moisture into a weld zone can be prevented by applying a sealing material if necessary, for example, in the case of being applied to the joining of an automobile body structure using a light alloy-made roof panel.
A second sheet 2 composed of a low melting material is superimposed on a first sheet 1 composed of a high melting material, and then a third sheet 3 composed of a high melting material similar to the first sheet is further superimposed on the second sheet. The surface of such structure is irradiated by a defocused high energy beam Bp to soften the second sheet 2, with the softened second sheet 2 cut by pressurization of a pressing roller 8 and removed from the joining boundary. The first and the third sheet 1, 3 are brought into direct contact with each other, with this contact part irradiated by a high energy beam Bw; thus, the first and third sheets 1, 3 are fusion-welded. If necessary, the sealing material is interposed between these sheets.
