Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject layered compound as a complex having such an optimum composition or structure that the reversible change in its molecular shape due to light irradiation represent a shape change at macroscopic level.
SOLUTION: This layered compound of the formula: (CjH2j+1(R,R',R") N)n.(M)1-n.(MgxLiySi4O10F2).(C12H10N2)m ((m) is 0-1) is obtained by icnluding azobenxene of the formula: C12H10N2 into a lipophil-ic layered compound of the formula: (CjH2j+1(R,R',R")N)n.(M)1-n.(MgxLiySi4O10F2) ((j) is 12-18; (n) is 0-1; (x) is 2-2.5; (y) is 0-1; M is a monovalent cation; R, R' and R" are each H, CH3 or benzyl). This layered compound is useful for e.g. the construction of microactuators to be driven by light irradiation, control of molecular sieve ability/catalytic ability by the aid of light.
