PURPOSE: To firmly hold a pallet on a tray and to easily disengage the pallet by providing the tray with a pallet engaging device, and providing a conveyor with a disengaging device.

CONSTITUTION: A conveyor is raised and lowered on a hoistway 3 by means of a string member and a pallet 24 to which loads are transferred from the conveyor is put in and out of a tray 8 provided at the side portion of the hoistway 3. In this lift type transfer device, the pallet 24 is freely engaged and disengaged at its end portion near the passage 3 by a pallet engaging device 38 provided to the tray 8. The pallet 24 can be released from engagement with the pallet engaging device 38 by means of a disengaging device 32 provided to the conveyor; therefore, the loads on the pallet 24 are in no danger of falling as the pallet 24 moves in an earthquake, etc.
