Abstract:
To provide an optical modulation element with which it is possible to observe an optical image by only one of reflection observation and transmissive observation, or an optical modulation element with which it is possible to observe an optical image differently by reflection observation and transmissive observation.SOLUTION: The optical modulation element includes a component element that reproduces an optical image. A maximum diffraction efficiency with regard to the component element in a wavelength band from 380 nm to 780 nm in the wavelength distribution of diffraction efficiency of a first-order diffraction light by reflection and the wavelength distribution of diffraction efficiency of a minus first-order diffraction light by reflection is 20% or greater. Furthermore, a maximum diffraction efficiency with regard to the component element in a wavelength band from 380 nm to 780 nm in the wavelength distribution of diffraction efficiency of a first-order diffraction light by transmission and the wavelength distribution of diffraction efficiency of a minus first-order diffraction light by transmission is 10% or less. Or, the maximum diffraction efficiency with regard to the component element by transmission is 20% or greater, and the maximum diffraction efficiency with regard to the component element by reflection is 10% or less.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7A
