PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulation element eliminating the need for applying a transparent electrode material to a drive electrode, capable of increasing an opening ratio of a pixel and capable of detecting a magnetization reversal operation.SOLUTION: A light modulation element 1 includes two spin injection magnetization reversal element structures in which magnetization fixation layers 11 and 12 spaced from each other in a face direction and fixed in magnetization directions antiparallel to each other are laminated on one magnetization free layer 3 via intermediate layers 21 ans 22, respectively. The light modulation element 1 changes a polarization direction of light incident from a side on which the magnetization free layer 3 is laminated, and reflects and outputs the light changed in polarization direction. In the light modulation element 1, a pair of electrodes 51 and 52 are connected to the magnetization fixation layers 11 and 12 and an electric current is supplied to the electrodes, so that the magnetization direction of the magnetization free layer 3 is changed to be the same as that of one of the magnetization fixation layers 11 and 12 while resistance is also changed due to the intermediate layers 21 and 22 having different resistance from each other.
