Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin display device with a lighting device of which contrast and visibility is high in the either case when the lighting device is turned on or off.
SOLUTION: A thin lighting device is placed in front of a display panel 2. This lighting device has a light guide 11 and a light source 12 placed on the end face of light guide 11. The surface of the element facing the display panel has many projections 13 and recesses 14. The projections are made of a material having a larger refractive index than the element. The light beams 16a and 16b from the light source are transmitted in the light guide and emitted from the projections and recesses to illuminate the display panel. They are reflected at the panel and emitted after penetrating the light guide.
