To suppress a decrease in a peripheral light quantity on an image pickup surface by lighting an original to be read as even as possible by the light emitted from a light source in a lighting device arranged on an image reading device, for example, like a film scanner, etc.
Light emitting elements 21, 22 are made to function as virtual light sources 21s, 22s which are virtual images by reflecting optical system elements 27, 28. The reflecting optical system elements 27, 28 are arranged so that the optical axes 21t, 22t of the virtual light sources 21s, 22s are axial symmetry to the optical axis t of the lighting optical systems 23, 24, 25 by arranging the light emitting points of the virtual light sources 21s, 22s at the principal focal point of the lighting optical systems 23, 24, 25. In such a manner, light intensity distribution is made almost uniform on the original F to be read, and a decrease in the peripheral light quantity on an image pickup surface is suppressed.
