PURPOSE: To safely disinfect a fluid such as water or air at a low cost, by sustaining a sensitizing material having a specified property on a proper carrier in a dispersed state, forming a filter from the sensitizing material-sustaining carrier, and passing water or air through the filter under irradiation with light.
CONSTITUTION: A xanthene, di- or triphenylmethane, acridine, thiazine, cyanine, porphine, indigo, aromatic nitro, nitroso, aromatic ketone or aromatic heterocyclic compound or the like may be used as a sensitizing material having an absorption band in the wave length zone of 380W800nm and a dissolved oxygen-consuming rate of 0.5 or more. The sensitizing material is dispersed and sustained on a carrier such as beads in a molecular level by dipping, coating, melting, dissolving, mixing, depositing, vacuum-depositing or the like method. The sensitizer-sustaining carrier 2 is packed into the outside wall 1 of a vessel, a visible ray lamp 4 is located inside the vessel 1, and a fluid to be clarified is circulated or passed along the direction shown by arrow 3 while being exposed to the irradiation. Thus, the fluid is disinfected with high efficiency.
