PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid composition containing a specific cationic substance and glycerol, excellent in setting rate, image concentration, image uniformity, reproducibility of color, resistance to bleeding, water resistance and property for preventing clogging of nozzle in ink jet recording and useful for ink set.

CONSTITUTION: This liquid composition contains (A) a cationic substance containing a polyallylamine (e.g. a mixture of a cationic surfactant having a peak in a region having ≤1000 molecular weight with a polyallylamine having a peak in a region having 1500-10000 molecular weight in the molecular weight distributions measured by GPC) and (B) a water-soluble organic solvent consisting essentially of glycerol in an amount of ≥5wt.% based on the liquid composition. Furthermore, the component B contains preferably further (di) ethylene glycol or thiodiglycol and the contents of these components A and B are each 0.05-20wt.% and 5-60wt.%.
