To make it possible to form a reflection type liquid crystal display device which substantially prevents the appearance of the shades of liquid crystal cells in spite of omission of diffusion layers between the liquid crystal cells and reflection layers, hardly gives rise to smear in display images and is excellent in visibility and the brightness of the display by sealing gap regulating materials of a specific value or above in the difference in refractive index from liquid crystals together with these liquid crystals between substrates.
The gap regulating materials 2 of ≥0.01 in the difference in the refractive index from the liquid crystals 3 are sealed together with the liquid crystals 3 between the substrates 1 and 4. The more specific examples of the gap regulating materials 2 include transparent particulates of an inorg. system, such as silica, alumina, titania, zirconia, tin oxide and indium oxide, and also include org. system transparent particulates, such as acrylic polymers, silicone polymers, polyester, polyurethane, polyether and synthetic rubber. The sizes of the gap regulating materials 2 are generally ≤100 μm in grain size. Above all, the particulates of 0.5 to 50 μm, more particularly 1 to 10 μm are used.
