PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal composition having a high speed of response and a decreased dependency of this speed on temperatures by using two specified liquid crystal compounds.
CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal composition comprises at least one liquid crystal compound of formula I and at least one liquid crystal compound of formula II. In formula I, R is a 1-16C alkyl which may have a substituent; R2 is a 1-16 C alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, acyloxy or alkoxycarbonyloxy which may have a substituent; A is any one of groups of formula III, which may have a substituent. In formula II, R3 is a linear 1-16C alkyl; R4 of formula IV; X2 is any one of groups of formula V; and Z is any one of groups formula Vl. A liquid crystal element prepared by using this liquid crystal has a high speed of response and an improved dependency of this speed on temperatures and can show good display characteristics.
