The liquid crystal composition contains an anthraquinone compound expressed by general formula, and a liquid crystal display element using the same. In the formula, R1 to R8 are each H or a substituent, but at least one out of R2, R3, R6 and R7 is a substituent expressed by (Het)m{(B1)p(Q1)q(B2)r}nC1; Het expresses O, S or NR, and R is H, an alkyl or the like; B1 and B2 are each a divalent cyclic group; Q1 is a divalent coupling group; C1 is an alkyl or the like; and m is 0 or 1, p, q and r are each an integer of 0-5, and n is an integer of 1-3, but (p+r)×n is 3-10.
