To provide a liquid crystal composition exhibiting a high negative order parameter, and to provide a liquid crystal element.

The liquid crystal composition contains a compound expressed by general formula (1), and a liquid crystal element using the same. In general formula (1), R1 to R8 are each H or a substituent, but at least one out of R1, R4, R5 and R8 is a substituent expressed by {(B1)p(Q1)q(B2)r}nC1; B1 and B2 are each a divalent aryl, heteroaryl or cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Q1 is a divalent coupling group; C1 is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an alkoxy, an acryl, an alkoxycarbonyl or an acyloxy; and p is an integer of 1-5, q and r are each an integer of 0-5, and n is an integer of 1-3, but (p+r)×n is 1-10.
