The liquid crystal composition contains a coupled compound having a structure which contains ≥1 of substituent expressed by general formula (1), and ≥2 of chromophores connected via covalent bonds. (Het)m{(B1)p(Q1)q(B2)r}nC1 (wherein, Het is NR, S or O, and R is H or the like; B1 and B2 are each a divalent aryl, heteroaryl or cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Q1 is a divalent coupling group; C1 is an alkyl or the like; and m is 0 or 1, p, q and r are each an integer of 0-5, and n is an integer of 1-3, but (p+r)×n is 2-10). The liquid crystal element uses the composition.
