To provide a liquid crystal composition having the slight temperature dependency of its threshold voltage without deteriorating its liquid crystal properties including threshold voltage and response, and to provide a high-contrast liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition.
This liquid crystal composition comprises a compound of general formula I, a compound of general formula II-b and a compound of general formula II-c, and has a nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature of 75-130°C, smectic phase- or solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature of -60 to -20°C and birefringence (Δn) of 0.07-0.30 (in the general formulas I, II and III, R1 is a 1-16C alkyl, 2-16C alkenyl or the like; X1 is H or F; and R8, R9, R10 and R11 are each a 1-8C alkyl or 2-8C alkenyl).
