To obtain a new liquid crystal compound excellent in compatibility, compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds esp. at a low-temperature, having a large positive dielectric constant anisotropy and an extremely low viscosity and also an extremely high resistivity and a good UV stability.
This liquid crystal compound is expressed by formula I (R1 is a 3-10C branched alkyl; ring A is 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; Z1 and Z2 are each a single bond or 1,2-ethylene; X1-X4 are each F or H; Y1 is 0 or a single bond), e.g. 4-{4-[-(4-methylpentyl)cyclohexyl]cyclohexyl}-1- trifluoromethoxybenzene. The compound of formula I, for example, a compound of formula II as one kind of the compound of formula I, is obtained by making a Grignard reagent act on a cyclohexane derivative of formula III to produce an alcohol from of formula IV, which is then treated with an acid into a cyclohexene derivative of formula V, which is, in turn, hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst. The other objective liquid crystal composition using the compound of formula I has characteristics suitable for application to TFT system.
