NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula l or formula II (R1 is 1-20C alkyl, acyl, etc.; R2 and R3 are 1-20C alkyl or asymmetric carbon-containing optically active group; R4 is 1-20C cyclic chain capable of containing asymmetric carbon; X is single bond, CH2O, etc.; l is 0-2; m and n are l or 2, provided that l+m+n=3 or 4].
EXAMPLE: 4-(4'(4"-Decyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoyloxy)phenyl di-(s)-2-methylbutylphosphate.
USE: An ingredient for a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition. The compound expressed by formula I or formula II has excellent chemical stability and light stability and is free from discoloration and is capable of providing a stable liquid composition exhibiting high-speed response at the vicinity of ambient temperature.
PREPARATION: A phenol derivative expressed by formula III is reacted with POCl2 in the presence of a base to afford a compound expressed by formula IV, which is successively reacted with alcohols expressed by the formula R2OH and R3OH each in the presence of a base to provide the compound expressed by formula I (X is single bond).
