PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful for obtaining a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element having a high response speed, a small temperature dependency of response speed, and excellent swiching characteristics by selecting a specified liquid crystal compound.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is obtained by selecting a liquid crystal compound represented by formula I {wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1-18 C alkyl, H or F; Y is a group expressed by any one of formulas II-IV (wherein Y1 and Y2 are each CH2, O, COO or OOC; and (n) is 2-16); and A is A1-Z1-A2, A1-A2-Z1-A3, A1-Z1-A2-A3 [wherein A1 to A3 each is a group expressed by any one of formulas V-VII, etc.; and Z1 is a single bond, Z2-(CH2)m-Z3 (wherein Z2 and Z3 are each a single bond, O, COO or OOC; and (m) is 0-16), CH=CH or C≡C]}.
