To provide a liquid crystal device mitigated in the effect of ion or charge and good in switching characteristics with no afterimage or the like, and to provide a liquid crystal apparatus mounting the liquid crystal device.
The subject liquid crystal device is such one as to use a liquid crystal 21 held by a pair of substrates 41, 42 and consisting of a chiral smectic liquid crystal composed exclusively of such a liquid crystalline compound as to contain elements C, H, F, N and O and contain no other elements; wherein when O is contained, the O exists only as an ether linkage, when N is contained, the N exists only in a pyrimidine ring, and when a chiral segment exists, it is in the form of a fluorine chiral, CF3 chiral or CH3 chiral, and have the function to apply voltage by electrodes 43 provided on these substrates 41, 42 to drive the liquid crystal 21.
