Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the scattering of light by a spacer itself and improve the quality of display by forming a layer for reflecting or absorbing a visual light in the area contact with at least one base board on the surface of the spacer formed in column.
SOLUTION: A base board 2 having a thin film transistor 3 and a picture element electrode 4 formed thereon is arranged opposite to a base 1 having a counter electrode 5 formed thereon, and a liquid crystal 10 is filled between the base board 1 and the base board 2. A liquid crystal orienting film 6 and a liquid crystal orienting film 7 are formed on the opposed surfaces of the base board 1 and the base board 2, respectively, and a columnar spacer is arranged between the base board 1 and the base board 2 so as to keep the space between the bases constant in plane. This columnar spacer is formed of a metal part 9 and a resist part 8. Namely, since a layer for reflecting or absorbing visual light in the area making contact with at least one base is formed on the surface of the spacer, the contact part of the spacer with the base is flattened by the columnar formation of the spacer.
