PURPOSE: To obtain color display superior in contrast by forming a scan electrode on a filter layer and burying a light shielding layer between respective color filters to be picture elements.
CONSTITUTION: A mosaic filter layer 2 of plural colors and a light shielding layer are provided on one substrate 1 of a pair of substrates 1 and 7 facing each other, and a smoothing layer 4 consisting of a polyimide resin is provided on them. Thereafter, plural transparent band-shaped scan electrodes 5 are provided on the smoothing layer 4, and plural transparent band-shaped signal electrodes 8 are provided on the surface facing one substrate 1 of the other substrate 7, and substrates 1 and 7 are allowed to face each other so that scan electrodes 5 and signal electrodes 8 are orthogonal to each other, thus combining picture elements in a matrix. Consequently, since the color filter layer does not exist on the boundary surface between an ITO electrode and liquid crystal, the sharpness of threshold characteristic is improved and the driving voltage is reduced and the smoothness of the surface is improved. Thus, liquid crystal molecules are uniformly oriented and the display of high contrast and high quality is obtained.
