To provide a liquid crystal display device which has high use efficiency of light and high resolution, which can be made larger in size at a lower cost by decreasing driving circuits, which has a fast response rate of a frame and good contrast ratio, and which is suitable for color animated images.
The device is equipped with a matrix type liquid crystal display element 14 having a liquid crystal layer containing a ferroelectric liquid crystal material, a plasma address driving part 12 to drive the liquid crystal layer, and a back light 2 consisting of fluorescent tubes emitting light of R, G and B colors. While the fluorescent tubes 22, 23, 24 of the aforementioned colors which constitute the back light 2 are successively turned on in an equal period in each frame of synthesizing colors of an image, pixels in specified dot positions of the liquid crystal element 14 are driven corresponding to the respective lighting period by the plasma address driving part 12. The liquid crystal layer consists of a ferroelectric liquid crystal subjected to monostable monodomain alignment treatment and it makes gradation display possible.
