To provide a liquid crystal display device which maintains brightness uniformity on a display screen and reduces contrast decrease on the display screen attributed to surrounding brightness, thereby capable of obtaining a good anti-glare property.
In a liquid crystal layer 15 sandwiched between a pair of transparent substrates, there is provided a liquid crystal panel part 2 on which a voltage is applied according to image data, and a backlight part 3 for irradiating with light the liquid crystal panel part from the backside thereof. In a liquid crystal display device 1, an image is displayed on the liquid crystal panel part, which has on the backside behind the liquid crystal layer a fluorescent layer 20 for emitting white light after being excited by ultraviolet light irradiation. The backlight part includes white light emission means 6, 8 for emitting white light, and ultraviolet light emission means 7, 9 for emitting ultraviolet light. White light emitted by irradiating the fluorescent layer with ultraviolet light radiated by the ultraviolet light emission means is superimposed with white light emitted by the white light emission means to irradiate the liquid crystal layer.
