PURPOSE:To allow the stable execution of a display of a high contrast ratio in a wide temp. range by combining specific oriented films and a specific liquid crystal compsn. CONSTITUTION:A pair of substrates having the oriented films subjected to an orientation treatment are disposed to face each other in such a manner that the orientation treatment direction of the oriented films are approximately parallel. A ferroelectric liquid crystal layer exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase is interposed between the substrates. The oriented films are constituted of org. oriented films having 8 to 30 deg. pretilt angle by the orientation treatment. In addition, the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer consists of the ferroelectric liquid crystal compsn. of a chevron structure contg. the compd. expressed by formula I or the compd. expressed by formula II or a mixture composed of the compd. expressed by formula III and formula IV. In the formulas I, II, R1, R2 denote 3 to 16C alkyl or alkoxy group; Z1 to Z6 denote hydrogen or fluorine; X, Y denote single bond, -CH2O-, etc. In the formulas III, IV, R1, R2 denote 3 to 16C straight chain or branched alkyl or alkoxy group; (m), (n), (p), (q), (r) denote integer of 0 or 1.
