Title:
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH10232401
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

To suppress optical leakage around a spacer in shade display or in the vicinity of the shade display by decreasing an electric field applied to a liquid crystal layer very near the surface of the spacer lower than an electric field determined by a voltage between electrodes formed on a substrate.

This liquid crystal display device holes a liquid crystal layer 54 between substrates 51, 52, which are laminated via a spacer 50 so as to form approximately a fixed thickness of the liquid crystal layer 54. Here, a dielectric constant of the spacer is made to be 1.2 times as high as an effective component of the dielectric constant or more, namely, the sum of those individual components in the direction of the electric field which are vertical and horizontal components of the dielectric constant of the liquid crystal material. And, when an electric field 9 is impressed on the liquid crystal layer 54 by electrodes 1, 4 formed on the substrate 52, the electric field 9 becomes close in the spacer 50 and becomes rough about the surface of the spacer 50. Therefore, since the electric field 9 is weakened about the surface of the spacer, a threshold voltage increases apparently. Thus, an increase in an optical transmittance is suppressed and optical leakage around the spacer 50 is suppressed.
