Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase scattering brightness and to enable a liquid crystal to be stably operated even by D.C. square wave voltage driving, by using a mixture of a specified nematic liquid crystal and a tetracyanoquinodimethane derivative as the liquid crystal compsn. of the titled device.

CONSTITUTION: 0.01W1wt% at least one compd. (B) selected from compds where 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane has one or more substituents at 2, 3, 5 and/or 6- positions (e.g. the compds. of formulas I, II, III and IV), is incorporated into a nematic liquid crystal compd. (A) in which the dipole moment direction of the molecule of p-methoxybenzylidene-p'-butylaniline or p-ethoxy-P'-n-butyl-azoxybenzene is approximately perpendicular to the major axis of the molecule. Then this liquid crystal compsn. is enclosed between electrodes opposite to each other to obtain the desired liquid crystal display device.
