PURPOSE: To obtain the liquid crystal display element for a highquality display which is improved in visual angle characteristics and and superior in visibility.
CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal display element, constituted by arranging a driving liquid crystal cell 3 between two polarizing plates 1 and 4, has a cell 2 for compensation arranged between the polarizing plate 1 and the driving liquid crystal cell 3 by inserting and holding chiral nematic liquid crystal between the two substrates. On at least one substrate surface of this cell 2 for compensation, a uniform liquid crystal orienting process is performed so that the angle (α0) between liquid crystal molecules and the substrate surface satisfies 70°≤α0<90°. A high polymer liquid crystal film may be used for this cell for compensation.
