To improve contrast of a liquid crystal display element in which a liquid crystal molecular alignment is determined by an alignment layer subjected to a rubbing treatment when not applying a voltage, and the molecular alignment state of liquid crystal is changed by applying a voltage.
The liquid crystal display element includes a pair of substrates which are disposed approximately in parallel and at least one of which is transparent, a pair of alignment layers disposed inside respective substrates, and a liquid crystal material filled between the pair of alignment layers, and surfaces of the alignment layers are subjected to alignment treatment so that liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal material are aligned in the same direction, and the alignment layers contain nanoparticles having ferroelectric properties. Especially, it is suggested that barium titanate is used as nanoparticles having ferroelectric properties.
