The liquid crystal display element is provided with a chiral nematic liquid crystal composition containing at least a nematic liquid crystal mixture and a chiral material, showing a cholesteric phase at room temperature, capable of selectively reflecting light having 420 to 490 nm peak wavelength and having 50 to 90 cP viscosity, dielectric anisotropy (Δ) of 10 to 30, refractive index anisotropy (Δn) of 0.15 to 0.20 and 75 to 100°C isotropic phase transition temperature and a pair of substrates with electrodes which sandwich the liquid crystal composition and at least one of which is transparent.
