PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display element having a wide visual field angle.
CONSTITUTION: Lower layer electrodes 31 are formed on a substrate 12 and upper layer electrodes 35a, 35b are formed thereon via color filters 33 and an overcoating layer 34. The upper layer electrodes 35a are connected to the lower layer electrodes 31. The upper layer electrodes 35b are so formed as to partly overlap on the lower layer electrodes 31. Pixel electrodes 22 are formed on the substrate 11 so as to face the upper layer electrodes 35a, 35b. The driving voltage impressed between the upper layer electrodes 35a and the pixel electrodes 22 is impressed as it is on liquid crystals 13 in the regions where the upper layer electrodes 35a and the pixel electrodes 22 face each other. The driving voltage is divided down and is impressed on the liquid crystals 13 in the regions where the upper layer electrodes 35b and the pixel electrodes 22 face each other. The regions varying in the voltage to be impressed on the liquid crystals 13 are formed within the one pixel, by which the visual angle characteristic is improved.
