PURPOSE: To obtain a uniform orientation film for a liquid crystal display element prepd. by arranging orientation films of a pair of glass substrate constructed by laying transparent electrode films and orientation films on each other to face oppositely to each other, and packing liquid crystals therebetween, by specifying the direction of orientation of molecules on the surface of the orientation films and the depth of the unevenness of the surface.
CONSTITUTION: Each transparent electroconductive film 2 and orientation films 3 are arranged in layers on a confronting surface of a pair of glass substrate 1, and the orientation film 3 is enclosed by spacers 4. Liquid crystal 5 is packed in the space. A liquid crystal display element is prepd. by fitting a polarizing plate 6 to one of the confronting external surface of the substrate 1 and a reflecting plate 7 to another surface. In this constitution, the orientation film 3 is constituted of mono- or bi- molecular film or cummulative film thereof, wherein a major portion of the longitudinal direction of the molecules 8 of the film-forming material is arranged in the horizontal direction to the substrate 1, and the depth in the perpendicular direction to the substrate 1 is regulated to 1W100nm to form thus uneven surface structure. Thus, a uniform orientation film contg. no defect nor uneven orientation is obtd. and the thickness is regulated simultaneously to an extremely thin value.
