To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display having high reflectance and high contrast and free from coloring in bright and dark display, wherein its constitution and manufacturing method are simple.
The liquid crystal display consisting of a TN liquid crystal twisted at a 90° angle, an upper substrate and a lower substrate 1 holding the liquid crystal, a reflection layer formed on the lower substrate 1, a plurality of dots which constitutes a display region and is disposed in a matrix shape and a color filter in which red, green and blue colored layers are arranged corresponding to the dots and which is formed between the upper substrate and the lower substrate 1 has a retardation layer formed between the upper substrate and the reflection layer. A retardation values R red, R green and R blue of the retardation layer corresponding to the red, the green and the blue colored layers in plane are nearly λ/4 in respective wavelength λ of 650 nm, 550 nm and 450 nm and the thickness of the retardation layer is set so as to be nearly uniform over the entire surface of the substrate.
