To provide a VA mode liquid crystal display device whose display quality can be improved by sufficiently controlling an alignment state of liquid crystal molecules over the entire gray scale area.
The liquid crystal display device is equipped with a first substrate having a common electrode, a second substrate having pixel electrodes, gate wiring lines, and source wiring lines, and a liquid crystal layer provided between the substrates. The liquid crystal layer contains liquid crystal molecules having negative dielectric anisotropy, and the liquid crystal molecules are aligned nearly at right angles to the substrates when no voltage is applied; and at least one of the first and second substrates has at least one of a projection for liquid crystal alignment control and an electrode non-formation area, and the gate wiring lines on the second substrate are arranged overlapping with the pixel electrodes.
